Standard Station
Edward RuschaAmerican, born 1937
The original source for this image was Edward Ruscha's first artist's book, Twenty-Six Gasoline Stations (1963), a series of deadpan black-and-white photographs documenting twenty-six filling stations along the famous western highway Route 66. Philadelphia Arts Council member Audrey Sabol commissioned this print from Ruscha for How the West Has Done! a Wild West Show, her groundbreaking exhibition of works by contemporary West Coast artists held at the Young Men and Young Women's Hebrew Association (now the Gershman Y) in Philadelphia in 1966.
