Plaque with Portrait of Henry Pelham
The portrait on this enamel is said to be that of Henry Pelham, Prime Minister of England from 1743 to 1754. It is the only enamel in the Museum's collection made at the short-lived factory located in Battersea, a suburb of London in the eighteenth century. Because for a long time it was the only documented enamel factory, English enamels were often referred to as "Battersea."
