Box

Image 1 of 41 / 4

From the mid-nineteenth century onward, the Samson porcelain factory made enamel-on-copper pieces in the style of popular eighteenth-century wares. The exterior of this box's lid holds a portrait of Vice Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson (1758-1805), the English naval officer who defeated the French at the Battle of Trafalgar. The interior has a portrait of Nelson's famous mistress, Emma, Lady Hamilton, that is based on a painting by George Romney of c. 1786.
