The Coats of Arms of the Rohrbach and Holzhausen Families

Monogrammist BxG

German, active c. 1470 - 1490

Coats of arms, designed to express a family's power and establish its ancestry, were also created for purely ornamental purposes. This engraving depicts the coats of arms of the Rohrbach and Holzhausen families bound together with chains and leafy vines, recording the alliance of the two families through marriage. The young man wearing a short jerkin and a feathered cap holds the heraldic device of the Rohrbach family; the woman to his right bears that of the Holzhausen family.
