Master's Hunting Coat

Wetzell, New York

1874 - c. 1943, incorporated 1910

This formal hunting coat was made by Wetzell, a well-known and long-established firm of tailors specializing in sportswear, and worn by Alexander Sellers, who in the 1940s was the master of the Rose Tree Hunt Club in Media, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1859 after English models, the club mirrored British styles in appropriate attire for its members. The right to wear the formal scarlet coat and club's embossed buttons had to be earned, and differently colored coat collars signified various levels in the club's hierarchy.
