The book’s title refers to a sandstorm native to the deserts of Arabia and North Africa. The poem titled The Neapolitan Wharf, is dedicated to Mikhail Larionov and illustrated with a print by Goncharova. Another poem in this book is inspired by Goncharova’s 1915–16 unrealized Ballets Russes costume designs for a Spanish dancer: “Wrested by Arabian chimes, the blackness of your lace emerges from the depths of the sea. The clasp in your hair blooms and shimmers.”
