Serving Dish

The marks that appear on the bottom of this serving dish are typical of those found on English silver of the eighteenth century.

The "f" enclosed in a shield at the far left is a date letter, which indicates the year the piece was made. The leopard's head crowned, second from left, shows that the work has been assayed, or tested, in London. The next mark over, the lion passant (a heraldic lion walking to the left), confirms that the silver is the required 92.5 percent sterling standard. And the rightmost mark, applied upside down, is one of the marks used by silversmith Paul de Lamerie.
