Late 19th century
Man's University Barge Club Shirt
As participation in sports increased in the late nineteenth century, men required new types of clothing for leisure wear. This shirt, made by Philadelphia's famous firm of Jacob Reed's Sons, would have attracted attention on any playing field. It pulls on over the head and has a pleated front placket as did most shirts of the time, but its bright color, bold trim, and attached soft, turn-down collar are concessions to active pursuits.
