Landscape with the Rape of Ganymede
Jan Pietersz. SaenredamDutch, c. 1565 - 1607
In Ovid's epic poem Metamorphoses, Jupiter assumes the form of an eagle to kidnap the beautiful young shepherd Ganymede and take him to Mount Olympus. Here, Abraham Bloemaert relegates the abduction scene to a minor role, in the sky between the two trees. The artist emphasizes instead the farmyard, which is dramatically framed by a pair of trees.
