Haneda Ferry and Benten Shrine
Utagawa Hiroshige IJapanese, 1797 - 1858
The elements in the extreme foreground of this print are not part of the landscape, but rather the legs and arms of a ferryman. The use of these parts of the body as a screen through which to observe the scene strongly suggests that the viewer is a passenger being carried across the water to the shrine.
