Scorpion Charm Used to Prevent Illness

Artist/maker unknown

The sacred Sanskrit syllables (mantras) and Tibetan invocations inscribed on this scorpion charm are intended to protect the bearer from harm caused by groups of minor spirits. Part of the charm reads:

With the mantra raksha rakshah, cast out all the illness-causing spirits, such as the Gyalpo, Drimo, Tsan, Sadag, Lu, Nyan, and Nopa. By the sound of this mantra may the trinity of gods, demigods, and humans, all of whom are established in the eight intermediate spaces of the four directions, be freed from all evils and illnesses.
