Naples, October 2, 1943
Robert CapaAmerican (born Hungary), 1913 - 1954
Capa photographed some of the most brutal moments of the twentieth century: the Second Sino-Japanese War in China (1934β45), the Spanish Civil War, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and many years of World War II, most famously the June 6, 1944, D-Day slaughter on the coast of Normandy, France.
The Four Days of Naples was an ultimately successful popular revolt against the Germans occupying the city. Naples, October 2, 1943 was taken two days after the event, and one day after the arrival of the Allied forces. More than three hundred Neapolitans lost their lives in the struggle; here Capa has photographed a crowd of grieving mothers at the funeral of twenty schoolboys who died in the uprising.
