The Virgin Adoring the Infant Christ with Saint Joseph

Bartolommeo Biscaino

Italian, 1632 - 1657

Biscaino's feathery, parallel hatching gives this etching a gentle mood. The position of the Virgin's arms suggests that Biscaino initially planned to depict her with both hands clasped in front of her and only later decided to extend her right hand, turning the discarded right hand into a fold of drapery.
