An American Woman (on Horseback)

Utagawa Yoshikazu

Japanese, active c. 1850-70

This print, together with the small prints displayed to the right, make up a particular type of "toy print" (omoche-e) called a "changing picture" (kawari-e). The small images were carefully aligned and attached to the full picture so that the viewer could flip through them to change the pose and nationality of the woman on horseback.
