Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian

Odoardo Fialetti

Italian, 1573 - 1638

The speckles covering large parts of this image are typical of tonal areas found in a number of prints from this period. They were probably made deliberately since they are concentrated in the shaded areas, but it is difficult to determine how they were made. Whatever the process, Fialetti left his fingerprints in the plate: visible on the left below the tree branch, they are bitten into the plate and not simply printed in ink on the paper.
