This tall-necked vase retains echoes of Chinese and Korean prototypes in its globular shape, incised decoration at the neck, and gray body. Kilns producing Sue wares-the first pottery in Japan to be produced using a wheel, rather than being built up in coils-flourished throughout central and eastern Japan. The olive-colored glaze was originally the accidental result of hot ash falling on the pottery from the wood used in firing the kiln.
