Document Box with Design of Five Butterflies

Artist/maker unknown

This bold design and shape are strongly influenced by the lacquer works of Hon'ami Köetsu. The butterfly has been a popular motif since the Heian period (794-1185) and is an auspicious symbol of love and happiness because butterflies love to be with flowers.
