This photograph depicts a corner of Atget's living room, although this fact was kept secret by him at the time. As with some other photographs from his Interiors series, Atget assigned this one a fictional subject: Monsieur R., a dramatic artist in the rue Vavin. Atget actually lived in the rue Campagne-Première, near the rue Vavin; since he had been an actor before turning to photography, the title incorporates a sly bit of self-reference.
