In the nineteenth-century, as today, no home was complete without a stock of board games for a rainy day. The diversions on display required little or no strategy, as winning depended largely on the luck of the draw or the roll of the dice. For this reason, these games appealed to players of all ages. The rules and scoring system typically appear in the margins, and occasionally call for a handful of separate game pieces.
