Distel (Thistle)

Plateelbakkerij De Distel, Amsterdam, Netherlands

1895 - 1923

Bert Nienhuis designed the combination of sprouting thistle and insects that decorate this panel. The pattern, called distel (thistle) after the name of the factory, is quite rare. Between 1900 and 1913, the factory won twelve international awards, and Nienhuis himself won a gold medal in Brussels. This tile panel was originally installed in the interior of a butcher’s shop built in 1906 in Leeuwarden, Netherlands.
