The Cerevisia Anglicana, or English Diet Drink
Artist/maker unknownFirst formulated in 1742 by Dr. Joshua Webster (1709?-1801), Cerevisia Anglicana (English Beer), was manufactured in England from 1798 to 1936. This early broadside boasts that the drink was "strongly patronized by the late Dr. Benjn. Franklin of America (who was cured of an obstinate Scorbutic affection by its use)." In addition to Franklin's scurvy, the product was recommended as a cure for all types of fevers, including yellow fever, typhus, nervous fevers, and "putrid and spotted fevers."
