The Travelling Quack - A Caricature of William Ewart Gladstone
William Mecham, known as Tom MerryBritish, 1853 - 1902
William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898), the dominant personality of Great Britain's Liberal Party during the late nineteenth century, was elected prime minister on four separate occasions. Here he is caricatured as a quack peddling an "Infallible Home Rule Ointment" as a remedy to end England's misrule in Ireland, a project that consumed his energies during the latter part of his political career.
Tom Merry was a professional illustrator known for his live "Lightning Cartoon" presentations on the music hall stage. One of the most popular was "Tom Merry the Lightning Artist Drawing Mr. Gladstone."
