According to ancient Chinese astrology, there is a fixed star in the southern heavens that corresponds to the North Star. This star is identified as Fukurokuju, the Immortal of the Southern Pole, who symbolizes longevity. Here the Japanese artist has depicted Fukurokuju with his characteristic long, high forehead, wearing a Chinese costume and shoes, and holding a staff to which a scroll is attached.
