Silver milk pots were the least expensive form of hollowware available to eighteenth-century consumers. Surviving objects from the shop of Philadelphia silversmith Daniel Dupuy, Sr., are mostly routine, modest productions or small pieces of jewelry rather than special commissions, suggesting that he did not operate a large workshop. A specialist chaser would have executed the exceptional Rococo decoration of leaves, scrolls, and shells. Dupuy may have sent a plain milk pot to an independent chaser for decoration, or he may have acquired the finished object from another craftsman for resale.
