Vase with Design of Scrolling Flowers

Yamada Jōun

Japanese, active early 20th century

Image 1 of 51 / 5

Angular five-petaled gold blossoms and silver buds growing on thin, swaying stems with curled leaves swirl around the body of this vase. The inlay of shibuichi (copper and silver alloy) is finely wrought, and slight variations in the thickness of the lines along the stems and leaves lend a sense of movement and vitality to the abstracted floral motif.
