Taurus: A Wild Bull in a Landscape

Artist/maker unknown

This painting shows a white bull, representing the zodiac sign Taurus. The charting and illustration of horoscopes and the study of astrology have long been important in India, and were taken very seriously at the court of the Mughal Emperor Akbar (reigned 1556-1605). The manuscript from which this page came was probably produced in the Imperial Mughal Workshop and most likely included illustrations of the twelve constellations of the zodiac. This work appears to have been cut down somewhat and a new border drawn around the main figure.
