Placing her work in the category of body sculpture, Marjorie Schick makes interactive constructions that challenge social norms about body adornment. This neckpiece is a linear construction that Schick calls a “three-dimensional drawing to wear.” Conceived, ultimately, for the body, this construction was intended by the artist to occupy the wall and to be a stand-alone expressive sculpture. “[It is] intended to make the wearer inwardly conscious of the body as well as outwardly conscious of the immediate environment,” says Schick. Defined by a grid of intersecting lines, planes, color, and space, the object is instilled with a sense of visual tension among its formal elements.
