Luohan (or arhat in Sanskrit) are disciples of the Buddha. As enlightened monks who have escaped the cycle of birth and rebirth, they protect the Buddhist faith and its teachings. In China, sculptures of luohan have been popular from the 1100s onwards. They were placed in Buddhist halls in groups of sixteen or eighteen, lining both sides of the room and flanking the central altar.
