Cai Guo-Qiang 2008 Postage Stamps: Peony

Cai Guo-Qiang

Chinese, born 1957

Image 1 of 21 / 2

Cai Guo-Qiang frequently works with volatile substances, creating "explosion images" by covering paper with gunpowder and setting off a controlled blast in order to create a pattern on the sheet. Here he has replicated this technique using an equally unlikely surface material—printed reproductions of postage stamps depicting peonies, a traditional floral symbol of China.
