Red Luster

Chung Haecho

Korean, born 1945

Trained as a wood and lacquer artist, Chung Haecho has revitalized and modernized the long-standing tradition of Korean lacquer art. Inspired by organic shapes, Chung seeks a harmony of form, color, and material through his work, as evident in Red Luster.

The red hue of this bowl complements its shape, while its smooth surface adds depth to the color. Chung achieves the vessel’s fluent curves and waves through the application of multiple layers of hemp fabric and sumac tree sap (lacquer) over a carved Styrofoam structure that is later removed.
