The Dentist

Giovanni Volpato

Italian, 1735 - 1803

Volpato's engraving is one of a series of twelve scenes of late-eighteenth-century Italian life. The banner at the edge of the platform proclaims in Latin FAMA VOLAT (reputation flies). It also shows the dentist holding a letter of recommendation, which bears a drawing of a large, diseased molar. The dentist himself extracts a similar tooth from the mouth of his tormented patient.
