Studies for a Chair in Peggy Guggenheim's Art of This Century Gallery

Frederick Kiesler

American (born Austria-Hungary), 1890 - 1965

Image 1 of 21 / 2

Kiesler was commissioned by American art collector Peggy Guggenheim to design a space for her collection and to develop new methods for exhibiting works of art. The Art of This Century Gallery opened in 1942 on 57th Street in Manhattan with revolutionary systems of presentation as well as multifunctional furniture for four exhibition spaces. Unframed pictures “floated” on projections from curved walls or rested on freestanding pedestals. As shown in this drawing, Kiesler designed furniture that could function simultaneously as bench, table, sculpture, display area, and chair, to name just a few of the eighteen uses the artist devised. He also constructed viewing apparatuses for the works of Marcel Duchamp and Paul Klee.
