Flying in Circles
Kang NingChinese, born 1950
Working in pear wood, long favored by woodcut artists for its smoothness, Kang Ning transforms a medium whose ancient origins are located in China. Using areas of shorter and longer hatched lines, he builds up the forms of a woman and horses in motion. Their instability in space is accentuated by the gaps in the composition that result from his choice to include the uneven edges of the blocks
