Born in Moscow, Irina Rozovsky grew up in the Boston area, graduating from Tufts University. She continued her studies at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, earning an MFA in photography in 2007. She has exhibited in Europe and in the United States. Rozovsky currently lives in Brooklyn.
Rozovsky describes her photographic style as “intimate distance.” This photograph is part of a series where she observes people relaxing or at play, often interacting momentarily with beloved pets. The setting for her subjects is frequently what she calls a “shared public space” like the one here in historic Prospect Park, New York. “I see Prospect Park as a kind of gritty paradise where a complex social reality is played out,” she says.
Rozovsky is known for her open-ended narratives and her neutrality in photographing historically charged subjects. She photographed Israel for her book
One to Nothing (2011).
