A linga is a rounded, column-like form that embodies and symbolizes the Hindu god Shiva. It is the focus of worship in all Shiva temples. Members of the Lingayat (linga-carrying) sect view Shiva as the sole deity. One of their practices is to wear a small linga in a geometric silver case around the neck. Most Lingayats live in the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka, where this necklace was most likely made.
