Fullmoon@Kitandara: Mountains of the Moon
Darren AlmondBritish, born 1971
Darren Almond made an extended series of photographs shot solely by the light of the full moon. In 2010, working with Crown Point Press in San Francisco, he produced photogravures of four such images made around the source of the Nile River in Uganda. He loved the otherworldly, giant plants found in the wet, tropical landscape. Their strangeness is augmented in this print by the shadowy nighttime setting and the long exposure required by moonlight, evidenced by the white streaks tracing the movement of stars during the exposure. This color photogravure—an impressive technical feat—required four separate printings, one for each pigment used in the work.
