In this drawing, Agnes Martin employed her signature gentle yet deliberate line work. Well-known for her abstract, grid-based compositions, here Martin provided only horizontal lines in a regularly repeating series of pale-pink stripes of watercolor and thin blue lines in colored pencil. Martin began creating her grid and line works in 1959–60, primarily in muted shades of black, gray, and brown. The artist moved to New Mexico in 1968, after which she started to embrace color and incorporate into her works the warm tones found in the landscape of the American Southwest.
