The human body and the natural landscape were themes of primary importance for Barbara Hepworth; Reclining Form (Trewyn) fuses those themes into a double image. The sculpture’s sinuous silhouette evokes the image of a recumbent body propped on an elbow. Trewyn refers to Hepworth’s studio in St. Ives, a resort town and artists’ colony located in Cornwall on England’s southwestern coast. What precisely links the sculpture with that locale remains open-ended, though we might associate the holes in the form to similar features in the rocky Cornish coast. The rhythm of a circular hole and a recessed circle enhances a feeling of internal dynamism, and incised lines introduce tension on the surface.
