As a young art student Louis Ritman became part of a community of American artists living in Giverny, France, near the home of the Impressionist painter Claude Monet. As can be seen here, Ritman was drawn to the decorative effects of sun-flecked shade in gardens, which he depicted using lively brushwork and vibrant colors.
When World War I began in the summer of 1914 Ritman, fearing that he would not be able to return the following year, worked feverishly to complete enough paintings to mount a solo show back home in Chicago. The resulting exhibition marked his debut as a professional artist.
