Late 17th century
Jug
Artist/maker unknownA loss of some of the ornament on the body of this jug reveals the nature and fine modeling of the thin strips of relief decoration that were applied to stoneware vessels. Even simple motifs required skill on the part of their designer, who needed to take into account the shrinkage of the molds used to create the relief as well as the shape of the vessel and its shrinkage during firing.
