Plate with a Lion

Artist/maker unknown

The lion depicted within a Chinese-style landscape may be symbolic of the House of Orange—a family that played a pivotal role in the political life of the Netherlands—since a lion is featured in its coat of arms. The artist who painted this plate had obviously never seen a real lion.
