At the Nouveau Cirque: The Dancer and the Five Stiff Shirts

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

French, 1864 - 1901

This drawing is a study for a stained-glass window (now in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris) that was executed by Louis Comfort Tiffany for the merchant Siegfried Bing's L'Art Nouveau gallery in 1895. It shows an elegant Parisian lady attending an 1892 performance of the Japanese-style revue Papa Chrysanthemum at the Nouveau Cirque in Paris.
