Guy Maccoy learned to use the screenprint technique while working for a commercial printer in New Jersey, making shower curtains and other products. Woman with Cat is the earliest known screenprint conceived as an original, limited-edition print. The semi-Cubist forms, defined by geometric planes and shown from multiple viewpoints, reveal Maccoy's interest in the stencil prints of European artists Albert Gleizes (French, 1881 - 1953) and Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881 - 1973), which inspired him to explore the artistic potential of the screenprint.
