In 1911 the German Expressionist artist Heinrich Campendonk, along with his fellow painters Franz Marc and Vasily Kandinsky, formed the artistic group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). These artists shared a strong fascination with the mysteries of the natural world, which Campendonk often rendered in glowing colors reminiscent of the glass paintings of German folk art that he admired. The idyllic, harmonious world of Love in the Forest, with its mystical union among people, animals, and nature, typifies the artist's highly personal symbolism, which often defies rational explanation.
