c. 1615

Portrait of a Gentleman (possibly Burgomaster Nicholaes Rockox)

Peter Paul Rubens

Flemish (active Italy, Antwerp, and England), 1577 - 1640

Nicholaes Rockox, nine times the mayor (burgomaster) of Antwerp, was a friend and patron of Peter Paul Rubens, who described him as an "honest man and a connoisseur of antiquities." While the identification of the sitter remains uncertain and is based primarily on comparisons with other representations of Rockox, the attribution of the painting to Rubens has never been questioned.
