Two Rhythms
Edith Clifford WilliamsAmerican, 1885 - 1971
Clifford Williams, as she was known professionally, was one of several women artists participating in the New York avant-garde during the early twentieth century. Although she was herself reticent to provide an exact interpretation of this abstract painting, the soft, green spiral rising at the center suggests the rhythm of the natural world, while the interrupting arcs of yellow evoke a more mechanical source: the whirr of a wheel, the flight of a plane, or a spark of electricity.
