Thomas EakinsAmerican, 1844 - 1916
The existence of an oil study for this watercolor can be sensed in the dainty completion of the model's foot, half an empty page away from the more finished head and torso. Like many of Eakins's portraits, the image captures the interior life of a model lost in introspection.
