Nocturne
James Abbott McNeill WhistlerAmerican (active England), 1834 - 1903
Whistler’s etchings made in Venice are among the most innovative of his career. To create the nocturnal effect for which this print was named, Whistler carefully wiped the etching plate, leaving a modulated veil of ink to suggest the glassy surface of the water below the distant skyline of Venice and the duskiness of the evening sky.
