Heraldic Panel with the Coat of Arms of Edward III, King of England (reigned 1327โ€“77)

Artist/maker unknown

Politically charged declarations addressing issues of land or authority could be made in a coat of arms. King Edward III of England gave visual expression to his claim to the throne of France around 1340 by quartering the arms of England with those of France, as seen in this panel. The dispute was a catalyst behind the Hundred Yearsโ€™ War (1337โ€“1453) fought by the two kingdoms.
