Rasalila

Artist/maker unknown

This illustration depicts the rasalila (play of passion), the circular dance of Krishna and the gopis. Here Krishna is replicated eight times to pair with each gopi. This painting has a decorative floral ground that bursts in all directions equally, recalling the embroidered textiles for which Gujarat in western India is famous.
